High School Sports
Tuesday was a busy day for high school sports. Eagle River dominated in boys' wrestling with a score of 69-12 against Grace Christian. Palmer also had a strong showing, winning 74-39 against Chugiak. In girls' wrestling, Eagle River won 12-4 against Redington. Boys' and girls' teams from both schools also competed, with Palmer emerging victorious with a combined score. It was a day of intense competition and skill on display.
Wednesday continued the sports action with Lathrop winning 106-12 against Hutchison in both boys' and girls' competitions. The local high school sports scene is truly a sight to behold.
Hockey
Tuesday saw some exciting hockey matches. West defeated Dimond 4-1, and Eagle River beat Bartlett 4-2. These games showcased the talent and determination of the local hockey teams.
On Wednesday, more hockey action took place. West won 24-11 against Dimond in the boys' division, with Declan Gee leading the way with a score of 216. Dimond's Logan Jokela also put up a good fight with 192. In the girls' division, Dimond won 35-0 against West, with Sierra Walkins scoring 212. Service and Eagle River had a close match with Service winning 17.5-17.5. Service's Lillian Blumenberg scored 123, and Eagle River's Morgan Van Slyke had 190. Chugiak also had a win against South with a score of 31-4, with Kaitlyn Heaston scoring 187 and South's Sharon Cho with 105.
College Sports
Friday was a big day for college women's basketball. UAA defeated South Dakota Mines 81-40 and followed it up with another win on Saturday with a score of 83-44. In men's basketball, Newberry won 62-55 against UAA. UAF had a dominant win against Northwest Indian College with a score of 104-68. On Saturday, UAA faced Newberry in a late game, and UAF played against Northwest Indian College in a late match as well.
Friday also saw some hockey action with Wisconsin defeating UAA 7-1 and UAF winning 2-1 against Minnesota in a shootout. On Saturday, Minnesota won 5-2 against UAF. The college hockey games added another layer of excitement to the local sports calendar.
Sports Events and Results
The 2024 Skinny Raven Turkey Trot results were also in. In the 5K women's category, Teresa Pohl from Eagle River, AK came in first with a time of 21:31, followed by Emily Schmieg from Anchorage, AK at 22:13 and Regina Fiacco from Anchorage, AK at 22:39. In the 5K men's category, Hyrum Nelson from Eagle River, AK took the lead with a time of 17:01, followed by Ryan Fox from Anchorage, AK at 17:20 and Jake Moe from Anchorage, AK also at 17:20. The Mini Turkey Trot also had some impressive results, with Elizabeth Augustin from Anchorage, AK winning the women's category and Declan Tegge from Anchorage, AK winning the men's category.
