In a groundbreaking initiative, the Kansas Food Action Network, a program of KC Healthy Kids, has launched the Food Secure Communities Initiative in 8 Kansas counties. This three-year process aims to address the root causes of food insecurity and empower local communities to find sustainable solutions.

Grassroots Approach to Food Security

The Food Secure Communities Initiative recognizes that the people closest to the problem are often the ones closest to the solution. By focusing on local-level interventions, the program seeks to empower communities to identify and address the unique challenges they face in accessing nutritious food. Each coalition in the participating counties has been awarded ,000 per year to drive this transformative process.Miranda Miller-Klugesherz, the Senior Director for the Kansas Food Action Network, emphasizes the importance of this community-centric approach. "While we have partners across the state working on these big and broad state, federal, and global level questions about food, food access, and the systems that interrupt your ability to access food — we really wanted to focus on what are solutions that communities can fix right in their own back yard."

"If we remove the question of, 'they're making these choices,' then it becomes a question of, 'what else is driving it,'" explains Miller-Klugesherz.By fostering a deeper understanding of the complex forces at play within local communities, the program seeks to empower residents to identify and address the root causes of food insecurity.
