A Flavor with a Purpose

Among the dairy's vast selection, the key lime pie flavor stands out as more than just a delectable treat. This signature flavor is raising funds for a cause that hits close to home. "You get a nice, delicious, summer treat, but you are also making a big difference, which is something that is really important," says Zachary Gwiazda, a 16-year-old working his first summer job at the dairy.

Empowering Youth to Make a Difference

Gwiazda's involvement extends beyond scooping ice cream; he also serves as the chair of the all-youth board of advisors for "We Cancerve," a nonprofit organization founded in 2012 to bring happiness to children facing various life challenges, from illness to homelessness. "We Cancerve is dedicated to helping children in sad situations and bringing swift solutions to them," Gwiazda explains, showcasing the organization's unwavering commitment to making a tangible impact on the lives of those it serves.

Providing Financial Assistance to Families in Need

One of the key initiatives of We Cancerve is the Pediatric Assistance Fund, established in 2016 at Sinai Hospital. This fund aims to support cancer patients and their families by covering essential expenses, such as food, transportation, bills, and medication assistance. Grace Callwood, the founder of We Cancerve, understands the importance of this support firsthand, having battled stage four non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma as a child. "I had no idea what cancer was or what it meant until I had it," Callwood recalls. "I just knew that my life is changing completely. This fund is something that my family would have benefited from many times."

Tangible Impact: Helping Families in Need

The Pediatric Assistance Fund has already made a significant impact, raising over ,000 to support families in need. This funding has provided 805 hospital cafeteria vouchers, 900 grocery gift cards, 300 prescription co-pays, 245 ride-share services, 500 parking passes, and covered household bills for 77 different families. Leaders from both We Cancerve and Broom's Bloom Dairy are hopeful that the key lime pie ice cream fundraiser will continue to drive support for this vital cause.

A Delicious Way to Make a Difference

For a limited time, a portion of every key lime pie ice cream purchase at Broom's Bloom Dairy will be donated to the Pediatric Assistance Fund. "I just really want it to help out and help the mission," Dallam, the dairy's owner, expresses. The key lime pie flavor serves as a poignant reminder of Callwood's journey and the cause behind the ice cream, as lime is the ribbon color for non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Engaging the Community, Empowering Change

Geannine Darby, the director of major gifts and clinician engagement for LifeBridge Health, believes this fundraiser is an "exciting way to engage new people who may not have heard of We Cancerve and what We Cancerve is making possible for kids served by Sinai." By leveraging the power of a delicious treat, Broom's Bloom Dairy and We Cancerve are inviting the community to join in their mission of supporting children in need. The key lime pie ice cream fundraiser at Broom's Bloom Dairy runs through September 30th, providing a sweet opportunity for the community to indulge in a summer treat while making a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing life's challenges.
