A Fateful Decision to Help
Tom Lamp, a 57-year-old Uber driver, was simply going about his day when he witnessed the aftermath of a hit-and-run accident. Without hesitation, Lamp pulled over and rushed to the aid of the injured motorcyclist, determined to provide assistance. "You just have to be a caring person," Lamp said. "Somebody that cares about life and cares about other people – that's what made me get out, because I couldn't pass somebody that was hurt on the side of the road."
The Tragic Twist
As Lamp tended to the motorcyclist, tragedy struck. Another vehicle, seemingly unaware of the situation, careened down the road and collided with both Lamp and the motorcyclist. "I saw some lights, I heard a tire skid, and then a car was coming up the road and hit us both," Lamp recounted. "It hit me first and then hit him."
The Aftermath: Hospitalization and Recovery
The impact of the collision left both Lamp and the motorcyclist hospitalized, with Lamp sustaining a broken foot. "I have 12 weeks where I can't put any pressure on my right foot at all," Lamp said. "After that, it'll just be aftercare for six months to a year before I get back to Uber – and I miss it every day."
A Community Rallies to Support
As Lamp faces a long road to recovery, the community has rallied to support him. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to help cover his expenses until he can return to work as an Uber driver. "If that guy lived because I did that, or at least made it to the hospital because I did that – it was all worth it," Lamp said. "And I would do it again."
Lamp's Unwavering Commitment to Helping Others
Despite the physical and financial challenges he now faces, Lamp's unwavering commitment to helping others remains unshaken. "I couldn't pass somebody that was hurt on the side of the road," he said, reflecting on his decision to assist the injured motorcyclist. Lamp's selfless act has inspired others to follow in his footsteps, reminding us all of the power of compassion and the importance of being a Good Samaritan.
