In a harrowing incident that unfolded on a Thursday morning in Campton Hills, a sedan found itself trapped under the rear axles of a heavily-laden semi-trailer, weighing in at a staggering 80,000 pounds. The accident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. at the intersection of Illinois Route 47 and McDonald Road. A Nissan Altima sedan, driven by a 70-year-old woman, was stopped at the stop sign on McDonald Road, waiting to turn onto Route 47. Meanwhile, a Kenworth semi-truck, hauling a 53-foot trailer loaded with feed, was traveling southbound on Route 47.According to the preliminary investigation and witness accounts, the Nissan sedan, for unknown reasons, entered the intersection and drove directly under the rear tandem axles of the trailer as it was partially through the intersection. The sheer force of the collision resulted in the sedan becoming trapped beneath the massive weight of the semi-trailer.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

Campton Hills police and rescue workers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found the two occupants of the Nissan in need of urgent medical attention. The driver was treated and released from Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, while the 77-year-old front passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle and was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove in critical condition.The semi-truck driver, thankfully, reported no injuries. The Pingree Grove & Countryside Fire Protection District handled the emergency response for the Nissan occupants, while the Kane County Sheriff's Office, Kane County Emergency Management, and the Elburn-Campton Hills Citizens Emergency Response Team assisted with traffic control. The road was closed for approximately six hours as the investigation and cleanup efforts continued.
